3. Census in 1850 in Franklin Twp., Adams, PA. 2 The 1850 U.S. Census, recorded in October, detailed two interconnected households living side-by-side in Pennsylvania. The first, the Beecher Household, was headed by Peter Beecher (age 60, laborer) and his wife, Catherine (age 58). They hosted a multi-generational family, including three of their children: Ann M. (18), Sam (15), and their son Josiah (aka Jesse, 22, laborer) along with Josiah's wife, Elizabeth (23). The youngest members were two grandchildren, both age one: Mary C., the daughter of Josiah and Elizabeth, and William, the son of Peter's son, John Beecher, and his wife Lydia Leeper. William's mother, Lydia, had died just months earlier in May 1850. Peter's property value was listed as $0, suggesting he may have been renting his home.

The second household, the Rife/Beecher Household, was located next door and was led by Eve Rife (age 57, a widow), who may have been Peter Beecher's landlord. Also residing with Eve Rife were two adults, Jonas Oner (21) and Elenora Figley (21), along with Peter's nine-year-old grandson, Cornelius Beecher (listed as a laborer). Cornelius was William's brother and son of John and the late Lydia Beecher.
Both William and Cornelius were recorded twice in the 1850 census; they also appeared with other siblings in widower John Beecher's household in Cumberland Township, Adams County in August. Five years later their father also died.

4. Probate on 24 Nov 1856 in Mifflintown, Juniata, PA. 6 A probate court record dated November 24, 1856, is a quitclaim deed in which Jesse Beecher of Marion City, Indiana, releases his claim to a property in Pennsylvania. For the consideration of five dollars, Jesse Beecher conveyed his entire right, title, and interest in the property to William Beecher, Samuel Beecher, and Elvina E. Beecher. This transaction related to the estate of their mother, Catherine Cashman Beecher, who had died in 1855.
The property being transferred is a messuage or tenement and lot of land located in Walker Township, Juniata County, Pennsylvania. The parcel, which is described with specific boundary metes and bounds, contains six acres and 128 perches and is noted as joining Simon Jones. By executing this release, Jesse Beecher and anyone claiming under him are forever excluded from having any future claim or demand on the property, which is now to be held by William, Samuel, and Elvina E. Beecher, their heirs, and assigns forever. The deed effectively finalizes the transfer of Jesse's inherited share in the land to his siblings.

5. Census in 1860 in Walker Twp., Juniata, PA. 3 William Beecher, hotel keeper, 40, was living with wife Jane, 35; Mary C., 14; Elizabeth J., 10; John M., 7; Elmira A., 3; and David P., 3 months when the census was recorded on 6 Jun 1860. Also in the home: Samuel Beecher, 24, laborer; William Patterson, 57, laborer; and Ephraim Kauffman, 23, carpenter. Everyone was born in Pennsylvania. William's real estate was worth $1000 and personal estate $900. The post office was Mexico.
