Rider Tries To Light Cigarette And Loses His Balance
As he lit a cigarette while riding on the rear of a truck early yesterday, Henry Beecher, 57, lost his balance and fell to the road at Cold Spring lane and the York road, suffering a fractured skull. He was taken to Union Memorial Hospital, where physicians said his condition was serious. He was removed later to City Hospitals.

A man who fell from the rear of a truck at Cold Spring lane and the York road Saturday died yesterday morning at the City Hospitals without regaining consciousness. He was Henry Beecher, 57, of 1304 Cox street, and the truck on which he was riding was driven, police said, by Pollis Gill, of Sykesville. Beecher, witnesses said, was riding in the rear of the truck and was trying to light a cigarette when the machine made a left turn from the York road. He lost his balance and fell to the road, fracturing his skull.

Three drivers were exonerated of responsibility for four traffic fatalities of this month, late yesterday in a series of inquests conducted in Traffic Court by Dr. Hubert Gurley, auto coroner. In the case of Henry Beecher, 57 years old, of 1304 Cox street, fatally injured October 19, when he fell from the rear of a truck on the York road, Dr. Gurley exonerated Tollis N. Gill of Sykesville, driver, when Beecher's son testified that his father lost his balance and fell while lighting a cigarette.
