James Beecher Pleads Guilty to Converting $40,000 for Own Use

James R. Beecher, 36, of 202 Princess Ave., a local insurance agent accused of defrauding two county couples of more than $40,000, was sentenced to a 1 1/2-to-3-year term in the State Correctional Institution at Camp Hill today in criminal court. Beecher, who was represented by defense attorney Michael Perezous, pleaded guilty to nine counts of fraudulent conversion and two counts of cheating by fraudulent pretense. His sentence was imposed by Judge Joseph B. Wissler. Perezous explained to the court that Beecher took the money obtained from the county couples and invested it in things "that didnt , pan out."
PLEADS GUILTY .
"He realizes that there is no excuse for this, but he is taking a big, long step by recognizing his fault' and pleading guilty," said Perezous, who asked the court to take into consideration the fact 1 that Beecher had a clean record up to this point.
Victims involved in the dealings were Mr. and Mrs. Roy R. Reinhart of Refton and Mr. and Mrs. Robert R. Collins, Bird-in-Hand Rl. The charges spanned a seven-year period, from February, 1964 January, 1971. The complaints against Beecher stated that the Reinharts gave him checks totaling approximately $15,000 to invest in Beecher Associates in behalf of the Reinharts. Instead, Beecher fraudulently converted and applied the amount to his own use, the complaint alleged.
GIVEN $18,000
Collins allegedly gave Beecher approximately $18,000 during the period for the purpose of paying insurance premiums to the Philadelphia Life Insurance Co., Ill N: Broad St., Philadelphia. This money was converted to Beecher's own use, the complaint said. The Collinses also were the victims in connection with the charges of cheating by fraudulent pretense brought against Beecher. About $9,000 was involved. County Detective Charles Simmons, who brought the charges, said it involved stock that never existed.
Beecher reportedly had been selling insurance in the Lancaster area for more than 10 years and was twice cited by the Philadelphia Life Insurance Co. for his sales work.
MILLIONAIRES' CLUB
In 1963 he became a member of the Plico Millionaires Club of the Philadelphia company after passing one million dollars in life insurance sales during 1963. In June of 1969 he was honored by Philadelphia Life for having produced one of the largest volumes of new business and second highest amount of premium income during a six-week national campaign. For these achievements he received awards during a banquet in Philadelphia.

(Shea) Beecher, to whom he was married for 32 years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his beloved son, Shayne W. Beecher and his wife Anne (Grove) Beecher, of York, a grandson, Max W. Beecher, of York, and a brother, Donald Beecher of Paradise. He was preceded in death by two brothers; Melvin and Gerald Beecher, and a sister, Betty S. Wise.
Born January 13, 1935 in Lancaster. He was the son of the late Benjamin F. and Nettie (Stevens) Beecher.
A graduate of J.P. McCaskey High School, Class of 1952.
His most recent endeavors through Ad Associates, Inc. of Shrewsbury, allowed him to continue his advertising and business promotional services at numerous restaurant locations in York and surrounding counties.
Visitation will be 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday, October 9, 2006 at Heffner Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc. 1551 Kenneth Road in York. A Memorial Service will immediately follow with Ellen Good, Chaplain of York V.N.A. Hospice, officiating. Burial will be in Millersville Mennonite Cemetery. Full military honors will be presented by the Lancaster County Honor Guard for his service in the United States Navy.
