16. Obituary: Traverse City Record Eagle: obituary of Muriel B. Ellis on 24 Apr 2001 in Traverse City, Grand Traverse, MI. ² TORCH LAKE - Muriel B. Ellis, 86, of Torch Lake, died Sunday, April 22, 2001, at Meadowbrook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire.
Muriel was born the daughter of Thomas Howard and Hazel Isabel Beecher on April 16, 1915, in Van Nuys, Calif. She married Paul Thomas Smith, who preceded her in death in 1963. She later married Carl Ellis, who died in 1967.
In 1936, Muriel received her Bachelor of Arts degree in sociology from DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind. She was a member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority. She worked as a social worker in Clinton, Ind. and earning her teaching qualifications at Butler University in Indianapolis, she moved to Traverse City, where she taught school for several years during the 1950s. In 1959, Muriel earned her Masters of Arts degree in Counseling and Guidance from Michigan State University, and the family moved to Michigan City, Ind., where she was employed as a counselor to children in the Michigan City public schools. Suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, Muriel spent the last years of her life on Torch Lake, where she had vacationed since childhood.
Muriel is survived by her daughter, Jill Beecher Smith Ehlers of Torch Lake, who was also her caregiver; her daughter, Toni Beecher Smith of Hudson, Quebec, Canada; and grandsons, Christopher, David and Michael Lawrence and Philippe and Patrick Conan.
A memorial service will take place at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 18, 2001, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Elk Rapids, with the Rev. Catherine Woods-Richardson officiating.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.

Muriel married Paul Thomas Smith, son of Lisle Rexford Smith and Carrie Jones, on 31 Dec 1938 in Indianapolis, Marion, IN.¹ The marriage ended in divorce in Jun 1949.
