19. Newspaper: Patriot-News, 18 Apr 1965, Harrisburg, Dauphin, PA. 25 NOW THEY KNOW WHO HE IS
Danville 'Mystery Man Heads 17,000 - Member Organization
DANVILLE - A rather disconcerting telephone call came to Paul C. Beacher, of nearby Mahoning Twp., immediately after he was elected president of the National Assn. of Purchasing Agents. The call was from a staff member of a trade paper in New York who wanted to know: "Who is Paul Beacher and where is Danville, Pa.?" The reporter, later in the conversation, told Beacher his paper had had complete profiles on two other candidates who had been vying for the NAPA presidency but no one on his paper even knew of the Danville man. It's different now, for since his election Beacher has been criss-crossing the nation in connection with NAPA work while also carrying on his regular job as purchasing manager for Thompson Ramo Woolridge.
BEACHER SAID he had not been surprised at the call from the New York reporter, since the presidency of NAPA usually goes to individuals from large cities. There are, he said, 17,000 members in the organization, which is observing its 50th anniversary. Since his installation, in Dallas, Tex., last May, he has often been referred to as "the man on the go" by his fellow members. He is already nearing his goal of visiting the NAPA sessions in 60 different cities over the nation and has traveled about 70,000 miles.
He has done much to tell the story of the purchasing agent, a man vital in industry but about whom the general public knows little. Beacher, born and educated in Shenandoah, is a lieutenant colonel in the National Guard and is a veteran of World War II.
IN REGARD TO his presidency of the NAPA, he commented: "There are at least two things needed for this post, an understanding company and an understanding family. Fortunately, I'm blessed with both." He said one of the biggest thrills of the job has been the opportunity of meeting. SO many people in so many parts of the country.
"I've had the e opportunity to speak with mayors of large cities, presidents of major companies and purchasing people on all levels of work. I've even been made an honorary citizen of Shreveport and El Paso." One other thing too, the staff of that New York trade people now know the answers to "Who is Beacher?" and "Where is Danville, Pa.?"
