1. Alt. Name: His father Benjamin's name is usually recorded as Derk. Jonathan's Civil War records and tombstone has Dirk. His Civil War pension, children's court records and his children's death certificates and tombstones have Derrick.,,. There are no graves named Dirk in Schuylkill County, but many Derk and Derrick graves.

We reviewed probate record indexes in Schuylkill County and cannot find an estate record in the 1880-1890 period for Jonathan Derk, Derrick, or Dirk. He died prior to 28 Sep 1886 when the G.A.R. purchased his tombstone engaved as Jonathan Dirk.

2. Census in 1850 in Coal Twp., Northumberland, PA. 9 The 1850 census recorded Benjamin Derk, carpenter, 30, living with wife Catherine, 28; Andrew, 8; Emanuel, 3; Janas, 2; and Ruben, 1. Everyone was born in Pennsylvania. Benjamin has no real estate value so he was renting, or perhaps living for free on land owned by neighbor Solomon Weavey, also a carpenter, or his neighbor, Maria Derk, 64, who is Benjamin's mother.

3. Census in 1860 in Trevorton, Northumberland, PA. 10 The 1860 census recorded in Trevorton in Zerbe Township: Benjamin Derk, carpenter, 40, living with wife Catherine, 37; Emanuel, 14; Jonathan, 12; Solomon, 9; and Mary, 2. Everyone was born in Pennsylvania. The post office was Trevorton. Benjamin's land value is not listed, so he was renting. His personal estate value was $50.

4. Military from 11 Mar 1862 to 27 Apr 1865 in , Lancaster, PA: Civil War: 79th Regimient, Company I. Recruited in Lancster County. 11

5. Census in 1870 in Trevorton, Northumberland, PA. 12 The 1870 census recorded Jonathan Dirk, miner, 22, living with wife Priscilla, 18. They were born in Pennsylvania. The post office was Sunbury.

6. Census in 1880 in Shenandoah, Schuylkill, PA. 13 The 1880 census recorded on Jardin Street: Johnathan Derkie [sic], miner, 33, living with wife Percilla, 26; Elizabeth, 8; Joseph B., 6; William H., 4; and Emma, 1. Everyone and their parents were born in Pennsylvania.

Military on 26 May 1891 in , Schuylkill, PA: Civil War Pension: soldier, Derrick, Jonathan, 79 Pa Inf., guardian Priscilla Beacher, mother Catharine Derrick. 16 Priscilla Beacher as guardian oversaw Civil War pension payments to her minor children sired with 1st husband Jonathan Derrick, who had served in the 79th Pa. Infantry, per pension application 522645, certificate 453502. On 15 Jan 1895, Jonathan's mother, Catharine Derrick, filed via application 608046.

10. Military on 10 Aug 1898 in Shenandoah, Schuylkill, PA: Jonathan Derrick was mentioned in the Veteran's Compensation Application of son Joseph Benjamin Derrick. In the Veteran's Compensation Application completed by Mary Ellen Derrick nee Sneddon, wife of Joseph Benjamin Derrick, she stated his father was Jonathan Derrick deceased and mother Brigisda Derrick nee Weary deceased. Joseph served in the Spanish American War from 10 Aug 1898 to 16 Feb 1899 when he was discharged in Plattsburg, New York.
