ELKTON--An Elkton man is in jail and a state trooper is nursing bruised knuckles as the result of a wild chase Monday night. James W. Beacher, 19, of Dogwood Road, Elkton, is in the Cecil County jail under $2,307.25 bond, awaiting a hearing before an Elkton magistrate. Reportedly, Trooper First Class L. E. Dutton attempted to stop Beacher on Route 280, near Andora, because of a faulty muffler. Beacher reportedly speeded his car, forcing the trooper off the road several times and narrowly missing spills on the shoulders.
He allegedly travelled 110 to 115 miles per hour through Elkton, going through the main traffic signal on Main Street at 110. Finally, his car went out of control at the parking lot behind a diner on Route 40, Elkton, some 12 miles from the starting point of the chase. As Beacher got out of his car, his hand went toward his pocket, a move which Trooper Dunton interpreted as a possible attempt to produce a weapon. So he swung at the man, injuring his hand. Beacher has been charged with operating his motor vehicle in excess of 70 mph, failing to obey an automatic signal, failing to obey the lawful order of a police officer, reckless driving and driving with a revoked license. It was his second offense on the last charge.
