Dr. Ernest Sumner Baker, 76, retired physician and farm manger, was found dead in bed in his home, 536 South Ninth street, at 9 a. m. Saturday. He had been dead only a short time. A heart attack was blamed. He had been ill several months.
Born at North Manchester, he was graduated from Purdue university and the former Rush Medical college. He then studied in Europe for five years before returning to Lafayette to begin the practice of medicine. He practiced in Lafayette for eight years until 1910 when he retired from the medical profession to devote all of his time to the management of his extensive land holdings. Dr. Baker was married in 1901 to Margaret Van Natta, who died in 1947. He was a member of Trinity Methodist church and Masonic lodge.
Surviving are a son, Ernest Van Natta Baker, of Monticello, and a brother, Linnaeus Baker, Long Beach, Calif.
