Despondent Man Blows Out Brains in Basement of Monon Y. M. C. A. -- Picks Own Undertaker
---
Frank Beeker, a laborer, committed suicide at 12:45 Sunday morning by shooting himself through the right side of the head, using a 25-caliber automatic pistol. Beeker had been loafing in the Monan Y. M. C. A. for some time and ended his life in the washroom in the basement. It appeared he had stood in front of a mirror and placing the muzzle of the weapon to his head, just in front and above the right ear, pulled the trigger. The report of the shot was heard by John Julius, former marshal of West Lafayette, who works at night in the Y. M. C. A. He had noticed Beeker was acting strangely during the past week and others who noticed him suggested to Julius that Beeker would kill himself. Julius went to the basement and found Beeker on the floor. The pistol was still gripped in his right hand and a stream of blood was flowing from the wound.
Chooses Undertaker.
The police were notified Beeker had shot himself, but was still alive. Captain Albert Nichols and patrolman William Staub responded with the city ambulance but Beeker was dead when they arrived. A note in his hat stated he wanted his body taken to the Rogers & Smith Funeral Home. The note also gave directions to a deed for a lot in the Battle Ground Cemetery where he wanted to be buried and disposed of a few trinkets.
Beeker was about 69 years of age and formerly lived at Battle Ground. He worked at the Monon shops for a time, but recently, it is said he had not been employed. Six children survive. He is also survived by a brother, Clyde Beeker, Battle Ground. The funeral was held Monday with Rev. W. M. Nicely of Battle Ground officiating. Buried at Battle Ground.
