8. Obituary: Patriot Ledger on 10 Feb 2012 in Quincy, Norfolk, MA, United States. 2 BROCKTON - Norma (Cordone) Woomer-Faenza, 78, of Brockton, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2012.
She was born in Quincy.
Norma attended Quincy schools and after graduation, joined the U.S. Air Force.
Norma loved being in the service and had traveled the world.
She had many interesting stories, some she could share and others she could not. While stationed in Weisbaden Germany, she met Sgt. Benjamin Woomer of Youngstown, Ohio. One year later they were married in Switzerland and were stationed back in the states. Norma retired from military service before the birth of her first of six children.
Norma was very active in various aspects of military life, including being president of the NCO Wives Club. She was a mentor to new military wives and their families. She also spoke fluent Italian and German.
While in the military, the Woomers moved around quite a bit. Norma loved to travel, so she enjoyed living in various parts of the U.S., but probably one of her favorite places was the three years the family was stationed in Bermuda.
After the Vietnam War, Benjamin retired from military service and the family settled in Brockton.
Norma became employed by the city of Brockton as a Principal Clerk in the Department of Public Works, where she worked for 17 years. She was a diligent worker and had a great rapport with her co-workers.
Norma loved to travel, play bingo, sing and listen to country music. When one of her favorite artists, Eddy Arnold, came to the Brockton Fair, she stayed after the show until she got his autograph.
After 35 years of marriage, Benjamin had passed away. Six years later, Norma became reacquainted with an old family friend from Quincy, Alexander Faenza, who had recently lost his wife Anna. One year later, Al and Norma were married in St. Nicholas Church in Abington.
Al and Anna never had children, so it took Al some time to get used to Norma's six children, their spouses, 17 grandchildren and greatgrandson.
But coming from a large Italian family himself, he adjusted well. In December of 2010, Alexander passed away.
Norma was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease seven years ago. Recently, her grandchildren participated in the "Plymouth Walk" as "Team Nana" and raised a substantial amount of money for research of this terrible disease.
Norma quietly passed away surrounded by her children. She is now at peace, and has many family and friends waiting for her in Heaven.
She survived her parents, Matteo and Giulia (who had immigrated from Torremaggiore, Italy); and her siblings, Tony, Matt, Nina, Ida, Grace and Eleanor.
She is also survived by her children, Steven Woomer, Julie Nihan, Cynthia Woodford, June Burge, Lisa Jouett, Suzanne Plaisted; and many nieces and nephews. She is loved by many and will be sadly missed by all.
All are welcome to calling hours Friday 4-8 p.m. in Waitt Funeral Home, 850 N. Main St., Brockton, funeral from Waitt Funeral Home Saturday at 8 a.m., funeral Mass at9 a.m. in St.
Edith Stein Parish and burial at Blue Hill Cemetery, Braintree.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Norma's memory to Alzheimer's Association, 311 Arsenal St., Watertown, MA 02472.
