40. Newspaper: Las Vegas Review-Journal, 9 Nov 1999, Las Vegas, Clark, NV. 38 Headline: Seniors combine faith, values, wisdom of age.
Flanked by a cross and stained glass windows, Clyde Beecher holds court in his wheelchair in the ment chapel of St. Paul's John McColl Family Health Center near Balboa Park in San Diego.
A retired Methodist pastor, Beecher has spent many of his 101 years in sanctuaries like this one He comes from a long line of ministers and counts among his relatives the famed abolitionist Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of "Uncle Tom's Cabin."
When he thinks back on his lifetime, two pieces of advice come to mind
"I think I would begin with what a philosopher said 'To love is to find your happiness in the happiness of another. My ministry involved a great deal of counsel ing, and that would have resolved a lot of it."
The second thing?
The words his mother said to him many, many years ago when he left for college "Remember Jesus Christ."
Over the years, he's noticed that good and bad behavior tend to come in waves. Lately, he adds, "I think we've been in a wave of self indulgence."
What needs to happen to move away from this self-indulgence? "I think the realization of the value of the life of other people," he answers.
Beecher was born on Sept. 2, 1898, in Michigan He moved to the Los Angeles area with his family when he was a youth and went to college and seminary there. He remained in the West for his ministry, serving from Spokane, Wash., to Phoenix to Point Loma, Calif., and raised a son and daughter with his late wife, Jennie.
He worries that economics have become too much of a driving force in society. When that happens, "our wants tend to become our moral standard, instead of the common good and personal fulfillment.
Still, Beecher is optimistic. In fact, his outlook is almost as rosy as the red in the plaid shirt he's wearing.
