Charles Anderson Bucher, one of Sunbury's oldest citizens, died Friday morning at 11 o'clock after a week's illness in the home of his son, R. J. Bucher, 222 South Tenth street. He was aged 85 years, 7 months and 15 days.
He was born in Sunbury May 12, 1861, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Bucher, pioneer Sunbury residents.
He was for many years an employe of the former Susquehanna Division of the Pennsylvania Railroad, in RF Yard, later part of the Williamsport Division, and now disbanded.
In youth he was a professional baseball player, his positions being shortstop, and catcher, and after he entered the railroad service he played on railroad teams in many games throughout the system.
He advanced from brakeman to yard conductor and served in that capacity for many years until he left the railroad service.
His wife preceded him to the grave 20 years ago.
He is survived by three sons, Harvey W., of North Fourth street, Charles H., Shamokin Dam, and Robert Joseph Bucher, with whom he lived, and one brother, John Bucher, Spanish War veteran, of Selinsgrove.
Funeral services will be held from the Shipman Memorial Chapel, Monday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. Park L. Wagenbach, pastor of Grace Lutheran Church, will officiate. Burial will be in the family plot, Sunbury Cemetery. Remains may be viewed at the Shipman chapel Sunday evening from 7 to 9 o'clock.
