Fighter Against Tuberculosis
Superintendent of Olive View Sanatorium Dies From Pneumonia
Dr. William Henry Bucher, superintendent of the Olive View Sanatorium for tubercular patients, died at his home, 14122 Hubbard street in San Fernando, of pneumonia last night. His death ended a quarter-century struggle against tuberculosis, which has left permanent, brilliant results in a number of places in the country.
Serving his patients, he once contracted the malady himself, recovering.
SUFFERS STROKE
Although the immediate cause of his death last night was pneumonia, a contributing cause was a stroke last August, which had enforced his retirement from active duty. He would have been 64 years of age tomorrow, having been born January 1, 1871, in Sunbury, Pa.
He obtained his medical degree in 1896 at a small Pennsylvania college, which is now part of the University of Pennsylvania. His brilliant promises began fulfillment during the Spanish-American War when he served as physician and surgeon aboard a man-of-war.
COMES BACK HOME
After three years in the Philippines and a period in Korea he came back to the United States to devote himself to the curing of tuberculosis. In 1908 he was at the Boston Naval Hospital, where his brilliant record received quick recognition. He was chosen to establish the government sanatorium for Sailors at Fort Baird, where in 1910 he contracted tuberculosis. When the World War came he was again ready for government service, holding the rank of lieutenant-commander at the San Diego Naval Hospital.
WORK IN RUSSIA
In 1919 went with a party of Red Cross workers to relieve the misery in revolutionary Russia.
When he came to the Olive View Sanatorium in 1921 it had been established by the county a year before and had but ninety-five patients. Yesterday there were 960.
He leaves his widow, Mrs. Elizabeth Skelton Bucher; two sons, William and John, and a sister in San Diego. Funeral services will be arranged today.
