Census in 1900 in Mahanoy Twp., Schuylkill, PA. 19 The 1900 census recorded renting a home: William Beecher, day laborer, 54, born Aug 1846, living with wife Priscilla, 47, Jan 1853; son Nathan, day laborer, 14, Jul 1885; son John, 12, Jul 1888; son Alfred, 8, Jan 1892; and daughter Laura, 6, Aug 1894. William and Priscilla were married for 17 years and she had birthed 10 children, 8 still alive in 1900 (some of these were by her first marriage.) The parents could read but not write. Everyone and their parents were born in Pennsylvania. Their census was recorded 8 Jun 1900.

He attended school on 16 Feb 1901 in Scotland, Franklin, PA. 5 20 When William Beacher died, his children were eligible to be sent to schools for fatherless boys because he was a Civil War solider. According to genealogist Bruce Beacher who gathered information from Alfred Beacher, Alfred said he and his brother John Jacob were raised in Scotland, Pa. in an orphanage.

The children of William Beacher listed in the state report indicates their school was in Chester, Pa.

That your petitioner is a minor child of William Beacher, late of the Borough of Shenandoah in said County, deceased, under the age of Fourteen years, resident within said County, and has no Guardian to take care of his person and estate; and that there is an application for a pension now pending therefore pray the Court to appoint a guardian for the purpose aforesaid.

Lyons guardian of Laura, Alford and John Jacob Beacher, minor children of Wm. Beacher. Three bonds in the sum of $300 each with Wm. F. Lyons as surety, were approved.

John Beacher, 29 years old, died at his home, No. 34 East Penn street, at 10:07 o'clock last night after a week's illness. One week ago he was taken ill suffering from a cold, which developed into pneumonia. Everything possible was done to stay the hand of death but without avail. He was well known and esteemed by large circle of friends. He was a home man and took a deep interest in his family. He was a member of the United Evangelical church and took an active part in church and Sunday school work. He was also a member of Major Jennings Council. No. 367 F. P. A. Besides his widow he leaves three small children and two brothers and one sister, Nathan, serving the colors in France; Alfred, Pittsburgh, and Laura Beacher, of Cleveland, Ohio. Two step-brothers, Joseph Derrick, town; William Derrick, Braddock, and two-step-sisters, Mrs. George Williams and Mrs. Edward Kantner, of Braddock, also survive. The family has the sympathy of many friends in their bereavement.

John Beacher, twenty-nine years old, died at his home in Shenandoah, following a week's illness with pneumonia.
Deceased was employed as a pump runner at the Kehley Run colliery. He is survived by his wife and three small children. Several brothers and sisters also survive.

Her name is Anna Beacher Zagorski. She also has two children and eight grandchildren. My father died when I was six years old. He was only 29 when he died. My brother was three and my sister was eleven months. ... I had two uncles Nathan and Alfred also an aunt Laura Beacher Parsons. I can remember when I was very small, my father would take me to Beacher's candy store. I do not know how he was related to my father but I do remember his name was Benjamin Beacher."
