Obituary: Subury Daily Item on 23 Apr 2008 in Sunbury, Northumberland, PA. 1 SUNBURY - Douglas Bucher, 83, of 1106 Susquehanna Ave., passed away Wednesday, April 23, 2008, at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville. He was born Oct. 22, 1924, in Sunbury, a son of the late Harvey and Grace (Niehoff) Bucher. On June 28, 1946, he married the former Hazel I. Bordner, who survives. Douglas was a graduate of Sunbury High School and served in the Army in Europe during World War II. He was a private first class in the 182nd Ordnance Depot under Gen. Patton. He was awarded the Diploma of Recognition by the French government for his participation in the liberation of Normandy in 1944-45. He was discharged on Nov. 3, 1945. He was a retired foreman at the Sunbury Textile Mills. He was a member of First Reformed United Church of Christ, Sunbury, since 1938. He was a life member of the East End Hose Company and the Friendship Hose Company. Douglas enjoyed coin collecting. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Judith B. and Lawrence Schiffer of Kyles Ford, Tenn.; two grandsons, Nathan D. Bucher of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Todd N. Bucher of Northumberland; and one sister, June Holub of Sunbury. He was preceded in death by one son, Barry; two brothers, William and Chester; and two sisters, Eleanor Wyand and Nancy Bucher. Friends will be received from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Jerre Wirt Blank Funeral Home, 395 State St., Sunbury, followed by the funeral at 2 with the Rev. Thomas J. Dunkle officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in Northumberland Memorial Park, Stonington. In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to donate to a charity of their choice.
