6. Newspaper: Baltimore Sun: Beekers Help Flood Victim Ruth Rosier, 13 Jul 1949, Baltimore, Baltimore, MD. 11 STATE AREAS FLOODED BY HEAVY RAINS
Torrential rains came yesterday in the wake of Maryland's long drought and caused flash floods in two sections of Baltimore county and throughout Western Maryland. At Parkton, Baltimore county, water from the Little Gunpowder Falls flooded the York road 4 feet deep, and ran into the Parkton Post Office, a garage and at least one home. The Little Gunpowder also overran its banks in the White Hall area. There was nearly an inch and a half of rain in the Baltimore area during the day, and amounts up to 42 inches in a twelve-hour span in Western Maryland.

The Little Gunpowder rose more than a foot an hour at Parkton after it started raining heavily about 11 A.M. The stream burst its banks at 2.30 P.M. Mrs. Ruth Rosier, whose home is about 100 feet back from the York road, was talking about the rising water on the telephone when Charles Mackart, 26, of White Hall, rowed up to her front door in a small boat.
Advises Her To Leave
He advised Mrs. Rosier that she and her 8-year-old son, Jerry, should leave immediately since it wasn't known how high the water would get. The Rosier home was the only one evacuated because of the flood. Four persons worked in water that rose to a depth of 4 feet, however, to move machinery and auto equipment from the first to the second floor of Webster Sutton's garage. Miss Nellie Beeker, 22, of Parkton, and her brother, Murle Beeker, 25, and Mrs. Talmage Rosier, of White Hall, aided Sutton as the water flooded the garage.
Water Rises In Trucks
Water rose into the cabs of two tractor-trailer trucks, that stalled on the York road. Mrs. Ruth Hoshall, Parkton post mistress, said the flood was the worst Parkton has had for eighteen years. The post office is several feet above the road level and water only covered its floor, according to Mrs. Hoshall. A number of gardens and backyards in the area were washed out and a few chicken coops were reported washed away. Both northbound and southbound train traffic on the Pennsylvania Railroad was delayed until the water receded between 6 and 7 P.M.
Staff Member Sent To Parkton
The Baltimore chapter of the Red Cross sent a staff member to Parkton to give whatever assistance was necessary. Roads leading south and west from White Hall were flooded and the Acme Paper Board Company, which is within a few yards of the stream, temporarily suspended its normal 24-hour-a-day operation schedule. Motorists at White Hall made no effort to get through the rushing water. Some heading for Baltimore reached their destinations here by detours which took them nearly to the Pennsylvania line. According to White Hall area residents, the flooded stream extended more than 100 feet past its normal banks there.
