2. He emigrated Documents in the early 1900s state the Twardzik family emigrated to the U.S. From Galacia, Austria, which after World War I was divided into southeastern Poland and western Ukraine. In 1883 from , , , POL. The Twardziks departed Hamburg, Germany on 20 Jun 1883 on the ship Lessing and that passenger list recorded John Twardzik emigrated from Samokleski which today is in Jaslo, Subcarpathian Voivodeship, Poland, but in 1883 was part of Austria. They arrived in New York on 5 Jul 1883. The 1925 obituary of Josephine Mroczka Twardzik states she came to America "40 years ago". The 1914 marriage license of her son Joseph states his parents were born in "Austria Galacia". Galacia is a historical region spanning what is today southeastern Poland and western Ukraine, part of of the Polish-Lithuanian commonwealth.
