Mayor Wendel Throws Out First Ball To Begin Play

Oradell -- The Little League opened its season yesterday at the Memorial Park field. Mayor Fred E. Wendel threw out the first ball. Leslie G. Gerdts, league president, introduced Joseph Cast of the Connie Mack League; James H. Lloyd, president of the Babe Ruth League; Andrew Corrinet, district representative for the Little League; and Mrs. Angus MacLeod, chairman of the Recreation Commission. Approximately 400 persons were on hand for the ceremonies. David and Jonathan Beacher played the national anthem on their trumpets.

Explorers from the North Bergen County Boy Scout Council have chalked up a historic first -- an invitation to spend a weekend as guests of the Military Academy at West Point.
Twenty-one Explorers and leavers spent 3 days at the Point, where they were taken in tow by six Cadets. The boys spent 2 hours living as Plebes -- they found it just as rough as advertised -- slept in enlisted men's barracks on the reservation, ate in the huge dining hall, used recreational and physical-conditioning facilities, and generally lived the life of a Mr. Dumbjohn.
