The America Booker and Benjamin Plew Family

America Booker, the sixth child of Isaac Booker and Betsy Padgett, married Benjamin Plew on 1 February 1849 near Carlisle, Indiana by John S. Davis. America and Ben can be found on the 1850 Census, page 213, living in Haddon Township, Sullivan County, Indiana. Ben’s age is listed as 22 years and America’s as 19; no children listed. On the 1860 Census, page 21, in Hamilton Twp., Sullivan Co., Indiana, Ben and America are listed along with their first three children. Ben’s occupation is listed as “Cooper” (barrel-maker).

Benjamin Plew enlisted in the Army during the war with Mexico and was drafted into the Army during the latter years of the Civil War. His military records from the Mexican-American War show he enlisted 15 June 1846 under the name Ben Pleugh and was discharged 23 June 1847. In applying for his pension, his deposition, dated 8 September 1892, states… “contacted measles at Ft. Jackson, New Orleans, Louisiana, in August, crossed the Gulf in a Cotton ship; landed at Brazos Island; hauled to Ft. Belknap.” Also, included in his deposition, “…was drafted in the Civil War on 14 October 1864 in Jefferson Twp., assigned with Provost Guard’s Commander, Captain Jones, and was discharged 8 February 1865.” At the time of the Civil War, his description was as follows: Five feet, eleven and one quarter inches, light complexion, blue eyes, black hair. In his declaration for Original Invalid Pension dated 14 October 1887, he includes the information that “his family Bible was burned over 50 years ago.” He mentions his son, Charles Plew, his adopted son, William A. Plew, and his grandsons, Willis Plew, and Jack Grizzle, and grandaughter, Annie Mason.

On 20 May 1891, Benjamin Plew writes in his pension application: “I always spell my name ‘Plew’…when I enlisted my step-father signed my name, and I do not know how he made it…Many people spell the name Plough and I do not know what the original name was, but I think it was Plew…Lived all my life in Sullivan County since discharged, except August 26, 1886 to 2 September 1887…living in Lovington, Illinois, and in Indianapolis from 1850 to 1851…”

On 15 January 1898 Benjamin declared he had two living children; Benjamin Plew, born 9 June 1865, and Charles Plew, born 11 March 1867. In June 1901, Benjamin Plew was judged insane, and Samuel F. Mason was appointed his guardian. Benjamin Plew’s pension records give his date of death as 7 June 1901. According to the notes of Catharine Booker Greene, Benjamin Plew and his wife, America Booker Plew were buried in the “Old cemetery East of Sullivan, Indiana.” Actually, they were buried in the Coffman cemetery in Carlisle.

From the Sullivan Democrat July 20, 1899: –American Booker Plew, wife of Benjamin Plew, one of the old residents of this city, died at her home on Section street Thursday evening of stomach trouble. She was 80 years of age and had been a resident of this city many years. A husband, sons and daughters mourn her loss. The funeral occurred at the family residence Friday afternoon, conducted by Elder Yocum. Interment at the Coffman Cemetery. Using Census’ the children of Ben and America Plew are as follows:

After John William Grizzle’s wife, Mary Ann Plew, died (after giving birth to six children – two listed below), John remarried in Bement, Illinois to Anna Salina Ferree, daughter of Isaiah M. The Ruel Booker and Lavinia Booker Family

Seventh child of Isaac Booker and Betsy Padgett was Ruel Booker. He married his second cousin, Lavinia Booker, daughter of William Jarrett Booker and wife, Elizabeth (see Chapter III). Lavinia, born in 1831, married Ruel on 28 November 1853 by Minister Levi Woodward. Ruel enlisted into the Army for one year on 17 January 1865 in Terre Haute, Indiana by Lieutenant John C. Mahan. Mustering in Terre Haute on 24 January 1865, as a Private, with Company F, 149th Indiana Infantry Regiment, Ruel Booker’s personal description was as follows: age 23, eyes dark, hair dark, height 5’5″, complexion dark, nativity Sullivan County, Indiana, occupation farmer. In Ruel’s military and pension records I discovered Lavinia’s request for a widow’s pension. Included in these documents was a description of Ruel Booker’s death. John C. Mahan, a resident of Terre Haute, Vigo County, Indiana being duly sworn upon oath says that on the – don’t remember the day of April 1865 or thereabouts, he was First Lieutenant of Company “A” of the 149th Regiment Indiana Volunteers- that on said day while Ruel Booker, a private in said Company was in the service of the United States, and in the line of duty at or near a place called Decatur in the State of Alabama, he the said Ruel Booker contracted disease as follows, the exertions and hardships incidental to his military duties caused an attack of disease called Apolexy.

Also found in the above documents was a copy of Ruel and Lavinia Booker’s marriage certificate and several statements of relatives and friends testifying as to proof of birth of each of their children. Here are the children of Ruel and Lavinia Booker:

The Rhoda Booker and James Mayfield Family

Rhoda Booker, eighth child of Isaac Booker and Betsy Padgett, married James Mayfield in Sullivan Co., Indiana on 21 December 1854. I found on the 1860 Census of Indiana in Jefferson Twp., Sullivan County, page 85, 31 June, James Mayfield, age 29, with his wife, Rhoda Booker, age 29, and two children, Rosina and Marshall S. Mayfield. On the 1870 Census of Indiana, Stockton Twp., Greene County, stamped page 438, I found James Mayfield, age 37 and wife, Rhoda, age 36, and their six children. Based on those two census’ James and Rhoda Mayfield’s children were:

Incidentally, in Wright Twp., Greene Co., Indiana, I found on the 1870 Census of Indiana, page 19, a George Plew, age 74, born in Kentucky, his wife, Sarah, age 74, also born in Kentucky. A daughter, Letssie, age 45, born in Kentucky, is listed in the household. Listed just after George Plew’s wife and daughter is his son, James M. Plew, age 48, born in Kentucky, with his family.

I have no information on Mahala Booker, daughter of Isaac Booker and Betsy Padgett.

SUDDEN DEATH BRINGS SORROW IN COMMUNITY

Charles Booker Passes Away Thursday Noon–Funeral To Be Held Saturday.

Suddenly and without warning another home in Sullivan has been made desolate and the community sorrows with the bereaved family. Charles Booker, 58 yrs. old, passed away at his home in South Rogers Ave. Thursday noon.

Mr. Booker had been ill but two days and this illness was not regarded as critical. Thursday morning he came to the business section of the city and consulted a physician. He returned to his home and lay down upon a couch. Shortly afterwards his wife heard him groaning and hurrying to his side found him dying. Heart failure is named as the contributing cause.

Booker was a miner by occupation and was well and favorably known throughout Sullivan County. For the past several months he has been employed at the Vandalia No. 28 Shaft, a dependable honest worker who won the respect of his union brothers and of every friend in his large circle of acquaintances.

The deceased is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mary Booker, two sons, Donald Booker of Sullivan and Sancho Booker of Indianapolis, three daughters, Mrs. John Fifer, Mrs. Nettie Russell, and Mrs. Blancet Hiatt, one step-son, Thomas Dailey of Sullivan and two step daughters, Mrs. Beulah Banther and Mrs. Lou Ridge.

The body was brought to the Billman Funeral home where it was prepared for burial and where many of Mr. Booker’s friends called to pay their tribute of respect.

Funeral services will be held at the Providence church Saturday afternoon at 1:30 with burial in the churchyard adjoining.

At this time I have no information on William Booker and Sarah Booker, son and daughter of Lewis M. Booker’s second marriage to Mary Mae Mayfield.

On the 1910 Census in Sullivan Co., Indiana, dated 19 April 1910, I found George R. Jordan and his wife, Maude Booker, and their one son, Clyde E. Jordan – age 1 year and six months. Also, living with the Jordan family, is Lewis Booker – father-law, age 74. At this time I have only listed the one child of Maude Booker and George R. Jordan:

Clyde E. Jordan b. 1908 Sullivan Co., IN

The Joannah Sophia Booker and William Allen Plew Family

Joannah Sophia Booker, daughter of Isaac Booker and Betsy Padgett, was married on 15 October 1859 to William A. Plew (nicknamed Jack) in Sullivan Co., Indiana. William was a brother of Louisa Jane Plew who married Phillip Booker, brother of Isaac. By using the 1860 through 1880 Census, I found the following children of William A. Plew and Joannah Booker:

Thomas M. Plew b. October 1865, d.

Permelia Plew b. 1868, d.. Marr. 9/6/1888 to Henry Border in Sullivan Co., IN.

James T. Plew b. August 1875, d.

Lucinda C. Plew b. July 1883, d.

I found William A. Plew on the 1910 Census of Sullivan Co., Indiana, age 79; he lists his father born in Pennsylvania and his mother in Virginia. His wife and children are not listed. According to the notes of Catherine Booker Greene, daughter of Perry R. Booker, William A. Plew was born 9 July 1830 in Sullivan, Indiana, and died at the age of 96 in 1926. He is supposedly buried about “one mile north of Sullivan on a farm. The old Plew Farm…3 miles N.W. [Northwest] of Carlisle near Ledgewood Farm…[then this is written]…Buried at Coffman Cemetery.” Also, Catherine Booker Greene states that “Ann [Joannah] Booker Plew, Isaac Booker and America Booker Plew are buried in the Old Cemetery East of Sullivan, Indiana.” We know now that the cemetery was really the Coffman Cemetery.

I have no information on William Booker, last son of Isaac Booker. I believe he died in childhood; he is not found on any census.

The Elvira Booker and Jasper N. Bennett Family

Alvira or Elvira Booker Bennett is listed on the 1900 Census as born July 1842, age 57, widowed (actually she was divorced), having had 8 children, but only five living. Jasper N. Bennett, living separately in the very next household on the 1900 Census, is listed as born May 1832, age 68, divorced. From the Sullivan Union dated 25 December 1907: – Jasper Bennett, an old resident of this city, died at his home last Thursday after an extended illness.
